Everything is coming together nicely for our Knox Reunion on September 17th -20th, 2015 in San Diego. As an added feature, we will have “Uncle Jimmy’s” Polynesian Dancers perform during our banquet on Saturday night. You may think that you are back in the Islands…so bring your aloha shirts and mumu’s for our luau around the pool at the Holiday Inn Bayside in Point Loma!
Also Now is the time to purchase a new hat for $12 or new T-shirt S-XL = $15 and XLL - XXXL for $20.
There are fifteen of us who have registered as of May 6th and made our deposits, which we really appreciate. Our goal is at least forty people attending the reunion. Please send the form and check to my address at: 3004 Lackawanna Way, San Diego, CA 92117. The registration form is on our website at: http://ussknox.org.
We have seven rooms reserved thus far through the Holiday Inn Bayside, with a goal of twenty rooms so that we can qualify for a free cocktail party on Friday night and a free hospitality suite during the reunion. Again, we really appreciate those of you who have already reserved your rooms. There is no deposit required, and you can cancel up to 24 hours prior to the reunion. If you are planning to attend, it would be great if you could make the room reservation, so that we will know how close we are to getting the twenty room minimum. We must book through the hotel to qualify for the twenty room nights. Telephone reservations are at 619-224-3621 or use the group code USK with online booking link of: USS Knox room reservations at Holiday Inn Bayside.
The schedule of excursions, activities, and other details are on the Registration Form, which is attached to the email version of this update. We will also post this update on the Knox website.
We are looking forward to meeting our shipmates from different eras of Knox’s history and, of course, sharing our Sea Stories! Your local hosts are also excited about showcasing San Diego, which many of us experienced in the Old Days.
Best of wishes, Bob Simonson, Reunion Organizer

2011 Reunion a BIG Success!
Attendees returned Saturday (6/18) from the 2011 USS Knox
reunion cruise aboard Carnival Glory from NYC to
the Canadian Maritimes (St. John, NB and Halifax, NS). We had
a fantastic time. I will post photos here soon.
Thanks to the efforts of our association president, Dave Todd, some attendees also got a VIP tour of the Canadian Navy frigate "Ville de Quebec" in Halifax. This frigate is similar in many ways to Knox and it was very cool to see how technology has advanced to make these ships more effective.
Many, many thanks to Denny and Michele White for coordinating this year's reunion! It takes a lot of time and work to make these reunions successful and we need to recognize all the effort they put into it. Let them know how much you appreciate it the next time you see them.
It was decided by the association board that the next reunion will be in Chicago in 2013 and we'll shoot for San Diego in 2015. Info about these reunions will also be posted here and on the Knox group page on Facebook as details unfold
3/11/11 - Photos of USS Knox Scale Model Here!
3/4/11 - Knox 2011 Reunion Information! There still may be time to register for a 5 day cruise aboard the Carnival Glory to the Canadian Maritimes out of NYC. Please see the Info page and get your registration form in ASAP. Those of you who have registered should have received an update email from me and Denny recently. If you did not, contact me immediately.
3/26/10 - Planning for our 2011 reunion is now underway. Denny White (Knox RM) is the coordinator. Denny was part of the original Knox crew and has attended all of the past reunions, and is a member of the Association board. He is currently researching possible locations and venues, some of which include Gettysburg or a 3-4 day cruise. Once the location has been determined, Denny may need your assistance. I will let you know more as details unfold. We're looking forward to your attendance!
1/3/10 - The membership roster has been updated to include most of the recent membership applications. I'm working on it!
- Due to a
variety of reasons, including detected phishing attempts, I
have removed the crew and missing crew lists from the site.
have received a large number of membership applications in the
past year but time and resources have been scarce and I've not
spent the time to update the roster. My apologies. If you did
submit an application, you received an acknowledgement from me
and have been added to the official and email rosters. So when
I send out Association info, and as long as your email address
is valid, you will get the email. I hope I will have
sufficient spare time this year to get the member roster
caught up. Remember, all officers of the Association are
strictly volunteers - we get no compensation for keeping this
organization running or for coordinating the reunions. That
applies to me, as well, with this website. If you had to pay
dues and the officers were compensated, the member roster
would very definitely be up to date. But for now I can only
make changes to the site as my personal time permits. I hope
you understand. This applies to photos or stories you may send
me, as well. We don't have infinite resources or space for
this website - we're charged extra if we exceed certain
limits. Since no one pays dues, we have to carefully manage
what monetary resources we have and spend them wisely.
Also, if you object to any of the emails I send, let me know. You can opt out from receiving Association related emails entirely by sending me an email with "OPT-OUT" in the subject line. I try to send only those messages I think the majority of the membership would like to see. Remember, you also have the option to use the DELETE key if the email is unwanted...

- Have You Been Exposed To Asbestos?
Asbestos exposure is a common
occurrence among Navy vets. It can cause a number of deadly
diseases including Mesothelioma. Symptoms often do not appear
for decades after exposure. Visit the
Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Center to learn
more about it and find valuable resources.
Excellent bulletin from the RAO director in the PI that gives
extensive information of benefit to all Veterans.
- New table uploaded outlining the
Awards and Commendations
Knox received from November, 1970 to June, 1990. Twenty years
of service to her country. Click here...
- New photos on the
2007 reunion page. Thanks to
Association selected as Official Partner of the
Veterans History Program.
After a detailed application
and screening process, the USS Knox Reunion Association has
been granted official Partner status in the Veterans History
Project of the American Folklife Center of the Library of
Congress. We join many other organizations who are dedicated
to preserving our history - such as the American Legion and
the Vietnam Veterans of America. You can see more Partners
We are now charged with actively collecting and telling our stories as veterans. All our experiences we collect as sailors aboard Knox will be preserved for everyone to see, read, and enjoy. Start collecting photos, write down your sea stories. Then send them to me.
That was then, and this is now...
Have you ever been curious about how well preserved
your former shipmates are today, or how they've survived the
past 20 or 30 (or 40!) years? Those of us who have attended
the Knox reunions know what some of our shipmates now look
like. But many more of you, for one reason or another, haven't
come to the reunions and probably don't have a clue what your
shipmates look like today or what they're doing.
Now's your chance to let your shipmates know what you've become. I will start a gallery here of before and after photos to bring everybody up to date. Dig up a favorite picture of yourself from the Knox era and one of you now. Submit your pictures in JPEG format (at least 300x300 pixels, but try to keep the file sizes under 500K) to me at firstname.lastname@example.org so I can include them on the Knox Association website with the rest of the Knox scalawags! I'd also like you to include a brief biography - married? family? what are you doing these days? etc. so we know what you became after Knox. Allow me a few days to get your images up on the site. See it here...
Knox is Sunk!
7 August 2007, Knox was used as a
target and sunk in 6700 feet off the coast of Guam. USS
John C. Stennis (CVN-74) participated in the sinking. It took
a combination of
Mavericks, GBU-12's and GBU-16's to take her down. Former
Knox ET2, Jim Burnette (now a LT and the
Maintenance Officer of Stennis), witnessed the event.
More details to follow...
is a Success! The reunion in
Bremerton was a great time for all who attended. BRAVO ZULU to
Rick Walton and Dave Todd (and spouses) for their hard work
making a great reunion experience. Preliminary
banquet photos can be seen
I'm still looking for
photos from others who attended!
Knox Is Gone.
Around 1 July 2007, Knox was quietly towed from Bremerton to
Guam to be used as a target in an exercise. No notification
was given to the Reunion Association. The reunion attendees
had hoped to see her one more time but some government
bureaucrat decided otherwise...
